Development History of Oil Immersed Transformer

Transformer oil is a kind of petroleum liquid, which has the possibility of combustion and has the disadvantage of environmental protection. However, because transformer oil has the characteristics of excellent performance and low price, the vast majority of power transformers still use transformer oil as insulation and cooling medium.

In the late 19th century, transformers began to use transformer oil as insulation and cooling medium, so oil-immersed transformers appeared. In addition to rich natural reserves and low price, transformer oil has been widely used because of its following characteristics.
1) Good insulation performance when used together with fiber materials, which can reduce insulation distance and cost.
2) Transformer oil has low viscosity and good heat transfer performance.
3) It can well protect the core and winding from the influence of moisture in the air.
4) Protect insulating paper and cardboard from oxygen, reduce the aging of insulating materials, prolong the life of the transformer.

Except for some special purpose medium and small capacity transformers and gas transformers, the vast majority of large and medium-sized transformers still use transformer oil as cooling and insulating medium. The insulation of the transformer impregnated with transformer oil is grade A, and the long-term operating temperature is 105℃.
